Product Description

Panasonic TC-P50G25 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

Amazon.com Product Description

Building on its award-winning 2009 Plasma line, Panasonic's 50-inch VIERA TC-P50G25 Plasma HDTV features a new panel with NeoPDP technologies that provide the best balance of black and white under brighter environments while also offering higher energy efficiency. The new NeoPDP Plasma panel also further reduces reflections and creates sharper pictures with higher contrast in brighter environments. This G25 series model provides 1080p resolution, full-time 1080 TV lines of moving picture resolution, and 600Hz Sub-field Drive for superb motion clarity.

This and other models in the G25 line offer Panasonic's improved VIERA Cast functionality, which enables you to stream Internet video and audio programming as well as turn this HDTV into a high-definition, wireless video conference center with Skype capabilities (when using the optional Panasonic communication camera and Wi-Fi adapter accessories). You can also play back JPEG images and AVCHD videos stored on SD memory cards and operate a variety of VIERA Link components--from Blu-ray Disc players to digital cameras--through a single remote.

Adhering to Panasonic's commitment to the environment, this VIERA model--as well as all 2010 models--features improved power consumption and meets the new, more stringent Energy Star 4.0 requirements. And you'll get a long Plasma panel life of up to 100,000 hours--more than 30 years of viewing when watched 8 hours a day--before the brightness of the panel decreases to half.

Key Features

Panasonic's VIERA G25 series Plasma HDTV with streaming content from VIERA Cast partners.

VIERA Cast: Enjoy a variety of streaming movies, TV shows, and music, photo slideshows, and home video conferencing with VIERA Cast's assortment of online content--including Amazon Video on Demand, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter, YouTube, and Picasa. VIERA Cast's addition of Skype (requires optional communication camera; model TY-CC10) enables you to connect and communicate through voice and video calls from the comfort of your own living room.

This VIERA HDTV includes two USB ports for connecting a keyboard or a Wi-FI LAN adapter (sold separately) as well as an Ethernet port for wired LAN connection. No PC required.

VIERA Image Viewer: View full-HD images with the integrated SD card slot, enabling you to view JPEG photos and AVCHD videos captured from your digital camera or camcorder on the big screen. Navigate your images via an easy-to-use thumbnail display, and choose from among five types of background music and five display effects. Plus, messages and memos can be added to photos from a PC to create detailed travelogues and original slideshows with messages.

VIERA Link: Allows the interlinked operation of various AV devices--from DVD and Blu-ray Disc players to home theater sound systems to digital cameras and camcorders--using only the VIERA remote control by simply connecting the devices to each other by an HDMI cable (see pop-up illustration).

Game Mode: With Game Mode, quicker image response increases the enjoyment of video games when a game console is connected to the TV. What's more, VIERA produces the dark images in video games more clearly. This mode works with the anti-image retention (wobbling) function, too.

NeoPDP: By redesigning the Plasma panel's cell structure and developing an innovative new filter, Panasonic has tripled the luminous efficiency (compared to 2007 models) of its VIERA Plasma HDTVS--resulting in stunningly beautiful images while also reducing power consumption.

1080 Moving Picture Resolution: With 1080 lines of moving picture resolution and integrated NeoPDP technology's high-speed drive performance, the display time for each image frame is shortened to minimize afterimages, making decisive calls in football matches and delicate motions in figure skating performances appear crystal clear.

600Hz Sub-field Drive: 600Hz technology lets you view superb full-HD motion and still images with 1080 lines of resolution. For even greater clarity with motion images, Panasonic uses its own unique image-analysis technology, which converts the motion in each scene into data. And each frame is practically displayed for a shorter length of time than in previous systems, to reduce aftereffects (see an illustration of 600Hz technology).

Infinite Black: The luminous efficiency of this NeoPDP Plasma panel has been improved by reducing the electrical pre-discharge that causes graying has greatly enhanced black gradation. The result is crisp blacks with no graying--even in living rooms with bright, afternoon lighting. And minimizing the electrical pre-discharge helps to both raise contrast and save energy.

THX Certified Display: THX reproduces film images as the filmmakers intended them. To receive THX certification, TVs undergo stringent tests to determine, for example, whether the exact same brightness and color are displayed at all screen locations, and whether black levels satisfy standard criteria.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

 "Great TV" 2010-05-22
By Dennis L. Chojnowski (Inverness, FL USA)
This TV is the best I have ever owned. Picture quality is superb. Love the ability to plug in a flash drive or SD card to view photos or video.

 "Gorgeous Display" 2010-05-14
By J. Rodriguez (Chicago)
Just got this TV this past week and it has a gorgeous image. The menu isn't too complicated and the setup was very easy. The sound does pale in comparison to the rest of the amazing features on the unit. It doesn't matter though because I have it running through our receiver. I recommend it highly!

 "Great picture, but..." 2010-05-08
By J. Houghton (Encino, CA USA)
The picture is great, much better than the LCDs and LEDs we looked at, which were too bright in all circumstances. The sound is okay, but there's a flaw that may be standard on today's flat televisions, but is something I can't quite fathom: the lack of analog "audio outs" on the back of the set. Why is this important? Because if you use an RF headset to hear the sound, as I do, there's NOWHERE TO PLUG IT IN! Thus, the headset has to be plugged into the back of the cable box. Oh, but you want to watch a DVD? Now, you have to pull everything out of the shelf so you can get to the back and replug the headset base into the back of the DVD player. Back and forth, forever and ever. It sucks, quite frankly, and it would have added nothing to the cost to put analog outs on the back of the set, which bristles with more inputs than anyone could possible use. (Yes, there's a digital audio out, but find me a headset that can use it, please.)

"Picture breaks up and freezes on vivid setting" 2010-05-02
By Xpert Shopper (West Chester, Pennsylvania United States)
I bought this tv a month or two ago when they first started shipping. We immediately found that the picture was very dull at the standard setting, but when we changed it to the "vivid" mode, we had a great picture. All was well after that until the other day when we noticed that the picture began to break up, pictualize, or whatever you call it after the tv was on for a few minutes. At first we thought it was Verizon, but we turned another HD tv on same station and no problem. After trying a number of tactics I finally discovered that if I set the tv mode to anything other than "standard" mode, the problem happened , although it is the worst by far on vivid mode. It does not occur on standard mode. it also only happens after the tv has been on for a little while. At this point I'll be calling Panasonic for a replacement tv. My guess is that it has something to do with the heat the tv drives on the vivid setting, but I don't know. If I leave it on vivid very long the picture just gets worse and worse until it completely freezes up. If it weren't for this problem I'd probably give this tv at least 4 stars. Great pic on vivid (when it works), but really washed out on standard.

Well, looks like the problem with breaking up and freezing was a problem with some settings in the Verizon cable box. Verizon rep took over the box remotely and made some changes and so far no more breaking up and freezing. Changed rating to 4 stars. Still wish it had a better pic on standard setting without changing to vivid mode.

 "Great TV!" 2010-05-24
By D. Erickson (texas)
What I like about this TV is the info screen, lots of info with next program. Can also show all channels at a glance with what is playing on each - a cool little feature. Very light, great picture sound, and lots of extras like usb for photos/music, easy access buttons on front to turn off - hard to see - which is what you want. Perfect for price.

Only thing missing is built in interent and wireless nic, lol.

"Samsung LN32C350 Review from LCD TV Buying Guide" 2010-05-21
By LCDTVBuyingGuide (Atlanta, GA)
Picture Quality Performance: With 480i images we noted some jerky motion artifacts in the background of some scenes. However, I did not see much offensive negatives in the foreground and was very pleased with the detail offered in 480i. The processors did a very nice job. Color rendition was not oversaturated, if not sometimes a little muted.

With our Blu Ray set to 720p resolution to match the TVs resolution we were very impressed at the bright sharp images and intense color offered. The TV really has a lot of pop with HD material. We also did not note the negative background judder with HD material and this proved out with our HD HQV processor testing as well. Black levels were deep and occasionally oversaturated but not often enough to really be a strike against. Dark shadow detail was totally acceptable for a TV of this size and price range.

Off center viewing was average on this LCD TV with the contrast and black levels fading at around 35 degrees off angle - again not bad for this price range.

Calibration: Calibration through the menu was easy and the C350 did a nice job calibrating to near D6500K. There are advanced white balance controls included on this TV which is unusual for this price point. There are also many more advanced settings than I would have thought such as Black Tone, Dynamic Contrast, a Gamma setting, and a nifty Flesh Tone setting that will take the onscreen flesh tones from a yellowish to a pinkish appearance at your whim without changing the overall color appearance of the picture much.

Picture settings as calibrated from the Custom Setting:

Backlight: 8

Contrast: 92

Brightness: 46

Sharpness: 10

Color: 53

Tint: Unchanged

Black Tone: Dark

Dynamic Contrast: Low

Gamma: +1

Color Space: Native

White Balance-

Rgain: 27

Roffset: 24

Flesh Tone: +1

Edge Enhancement: Off

As far as aesthetic considerations go, the LN32C350 has straightforward design and better than the other 32" models on the market except the LG's. You almost cant believe how light the TV is upon lifting it, a scant 15.7 pounds. The TV is 3.25" in depth and 8" with the stand. The included table stand is very light and inexpensive and the TV must be turned on its head and the table stand screwed on upside down to accomplish the assembly. It would be more convenient if Samsung would just include the stand already assembled on the TV, same as some other manufacturers. The table top stand does not swivel side to side. The 2" bezel framing of the TV is gloss black and non-spectacular but does contain a sloped design element at the bottom.

Audio Output: The two inbuilt 5 watt speakers barely get the job done. From 10 feet the user will need to keep the volume control at 75% of total capacity. The volume quality also is lacking with a tinny character and no base - but that's about all you can expect from 5 watt speakers.

For more plus the overall ratings see LCD TV Buying Guide.

 "Great Bedroom HDTV" 2010-05-21
By Don G. Connell (Lubbock, Texas)
I upgraded my bedroom tv to this Samsung HDTV. The picture and quality of a Samsung HDTV is outstanding. I had another brand of HDTV in there first, but with the new HD Receiver I purchased, I couldn't get a picture on it. I moved it to another room and with the Samsung I had no problem at all. I now have 3 Samsung LCD HDTV sets in my house, Living Room 52", bedroom 32" and 23" in dressing room. I couldn't be happier with my purchases of Samsung HDTV TV Sets.

I have had several people tell me that they have never seen a better picture on a HDTV than the ones I have.

 "Samsung 32" LCD HDTV" 2010-05-10
By L. Smith (Tampa, FL USA)
No more Sonys for me. Samsung has the finest quality picture on the market. This is one fine TV.

 "Limited Inputs" 2010-05-07
By Jennifer D. Gregory (Haddon Township, NJ)
The picture quality is pretty good, and it's one of the cheapest HD sets for this size. But there is only a SHARED component/composite input so you can only have one device of either type plugged in at a time. (Composite switchboxes are easy to pick up, but good luck finding a switch box that handles both composite and component.) Since all the female plugs are in the back (none on the side, as mid and upper range TVs for easy access and switching of cables), this is very inconvenient. This set was for our son, who has both a GameCube (composite) and a PS2 (component). He just plays the PS2 and the GameCube collects dust.

"A GREAT TV! ASTOUNDING PICTURE!" 2010-05-20
By Altaf Bhaloo (Dallas, TX.)
The TV that makes your jaw open wide with amazement! amazing picture clarity, excellent sound and flawless internet connection makes this SAMSUNG the TV of clearly worth the money spent! I was a SONY fan and now this is my first SAMSUNG purchase makes me proud of myself to have made a wise decision.

Go ahead make the purchase if you are into buying a TV. I am positive you will not regret!, I have had it for a month now and it still amazes me. BRAVO SAMSUNG! keep it up.

Cons: nothing i can think of now but the touch of red is kinda stupid for it never shows and that should never stop you from buying this fine TV

"LCD with an LED picture, but not an LED price tag!" 2010-05-17
By W. freeman (fairmont, wv)
After taking back the dreaded Panasonic that i just couldnt get into, i said well i'll go ahead with the samsung LED. Well much to my delight they had this model, my friend had this C650 C meaning this years model, the display was a B meaning last years model and i was about to go with it but they had none. So i said ok just give me the new one. I got mine at Sears so i sat with two remotes, one for this and one for the 1899% LED 46", the picture on this just crushed it, i adjusted all the same setting on both and it was just like night and day, and this was just BASIC CABLE!! So i was sold, got it home, hooked it up, had it set up within like 5 minute with little to no fine tuning and its just the best picture you will find on any model of Samsung out there. This is a higher end model and it has the glass panel covering the front, as some do, and some don't, this give it a real glass type look, and movies just out at you almost like 3-D. Avatar looked amazing and my father about fell over when he saw the picture compared to his 52" Samsung from last year(which looked great) but nothing like this. So you think LED's are overrated? Well this will prove you right, i've been through many TVs trying them out, tweeking them etc. and nothing can top this one, sure the Panasonic had very deep black levels and a great picture, but it didn't have the 120hz Motion Plus and didn't swivel. The 600hz that is broken up into 60hz each all around the Plasma HDTVs doesnt compare to the fluent motion of the lcd's, you still see judder and motion blurr, just a little less blur, but lots of lag. Its still there just like the regular 60hz tv's although sometimes not as bad. Still if you want that cinematic experience and things that make a movie look like you're seeing for the first time, get this one. Its well worth it and then some.

"Cool TV and great delivery by Amazon" 2010-05-17
By Amazon fan Bala (bay area, ca USA)
It's a great TV with internet capabilities and USB ports. There are sufficient ports and at 120Hz the football game is much better. It will probably require 240Hz for perfect game view!! Overall its a good tv and amazon delivery was really good. They came as per appointment time, opened the box and verified functionality.

"Great combination of quality, features and price" 2010-05-15
By Kevin Woodward (Soquel, CA United States)
This is my second Samsung LCD HDTV and even more impressed this time around. Was looking for an upgrade and bigger screen to my previous 32-inch and 720 resolution and when price on this new model dropped I jumped on it without hesitation. The improvements in regard to usability and setup by Samsung are impressive ... just plugged in and started watching. No trouble whatsoever with Comcast or my Blu-Ray. The picture is so good that it actually takes getting used to shows and movies produced in studio ... I swear you can see the wires, makeup and other stage props. Sports and live outdoor HD broadcasts are unbelievable. I enjoy the Yahoo! widgets, especially Twitter and Pandora, but wish Yahoo! would synch up my email account, too. Would be sweet if they would offer New York Times in addition to USA Today, and even sweeter to have Facebook ... but absolutely no complaints. I LOVE THIS TV and would highly recommend to anyone.

 "Completely Forgettable" 2010-05-11
By Basswick
I'll be returning this computer, I'll be down $50 for restocking fees, and really don't mind. I'm just glad I can be rid of it.

I suggest all these other glowing reviewers do the same. Get over the OMG LOLz IT'S SO SMALL!!!1! and move on with life.

The design decisions Acer made for this netbook suggest their engineers must have been in a mentally altered state when they signed off the drawings.

- The touchpad is textured? On purpose? Great, I have to lube my finger to use my netbook. Apple builds the smoothest glass touchpads into their portable computers because smooth is smooth. There is no expectation of that kind of quality here... but why the deliberately bumpy plastic?

- The palm-rest and mouse buttons are glossy plastic. Clearly an alternative plastic exists as the rest of the netbook is encased in it, but for some reason Acer wants you to see every single disgusting smudge you leave under your palms.

- Keyboard is forgettable. Zero tactile feedback. Try typing on mashed potatoes, and you'll get the idea.

- The Atom processor with Windows 7 is worthless. No single reviewer here must have played a Hulu video and actually paid attention. It barely works. WiFi performance is just as disappointing. Which leads to the next point...

- A 10-hour battery is also worthless if it takes 5 times longer to do everything. That's how slowly Windows 7 responds on this hardware. You can count the seconds it takes to switch tabs in Internet Explorer.

- There's more, but I'm tired.

Save up $100 more and get the lowest grade 15-inch laptop you can find, deal with the size, and you will be infinitely happier than I am.

I would order this exact Acer Notebook again. Fantastic model. Battery is true to ten hours no matter how many on and off you do. Set up the when it powers down like shutting the lid and save battery power. Very light weight.

 "Acer pushes the envelope" 2010-05-07
By W. J. Shultz
It is all the good things it says it is but here are the drawbacks from my point-of-view:

1. Cheap plastic construction (this is partially to lower the cost and partially to lower the weight)

2. It is not clear if the RAM is upgradable to 2GB, my first attempt to do so using Crucial recommended 2GB module upgrade turned out to be a dud (a [...] issue). Acer needs to clarify the true capability of the motherboard (1 or 2GB of RAM?). In the long run 1GB is not enough if you want to run multiple programs using Windows 7 on this netbook, so plan to be somewhat frustrated with the speed and sometimes non-responsiveness of the netbook.

3. Difficult to type on because of lightweight keys (I know, I know, its a netbook, but quick typing requires firm keys to minimize typos)

4. Not so friendly touchpad, get a portable mouse!

However, for the price and if you just want to surf the internet and word process it is a good option

 "ACER 532h-2964 netbook" 2010-05-07
By James D. Grange (Jacksonville, FL)
I needed a computer to view pdf documents during a 2.5 day seminar. I also looked at purchasing an Ipad. After reviewing the specifications of both, I decided on the netbook, as you can use it as a computer (it is a computer). All the software I have installed on the netbook works, but keep in mind that I use business software, not games.

Upon purchasing the computer, the first thing I did was upgrade the memory. I highly recommend you do a memory upgrade to 2G, but make sure to read the blogs and post concerning memory upgrade, as I read the recommended Crucial memory upgrade does not work. I purchased Kingston part # KVR800D2S6/2G memory upgrade as recommended on a blog post, and it works fine. I installed it, booted the computer, and it recognized the 2G without any problem. The computer runs SO MUCH BETTER with the upgrade, and far exceeds my expectations for the computer. Acer should offer this computer with the upgraded memory, but I understand they have to offer this computer in a competitive market.

The only problem I have come across is from time to time I will boot the computer and there will be no keyboard response. I simply reboot and everything works fine. I know, this is puzzling, but with the memory upgrade, overall, it is a great netbook computer that exceed my expectations for a netbook computer.

 "Just Amazing" 2010-04-21
By K. KOENIGS
To start off, I was very skeptical about the whole Netbook idea. I have always owned very large/heavy laptops, the whole concept of bigger is always better is what sold me the past for buying them. Now, I'm starting to rethink that strategy. After many hours of painstaking research on which one I should buy and try to sell myself on the idea of a Netbook as well. So, I finally settled on this particular model and ordered up all the extra gear to go along with it. One of the additional items I ordered for it was the 2Gig memory upgrade kit for it. I was very leery about this move after reading some of the other reviews left by other owners who had ran into problems when upgrading from 1Gig and going to 2Gigs. The trick for ordering the correct memory was to ignore the recommended memory model for the unit and go with (Crucial - CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module) the next model up on the Crucial memory.

The first thing I did was open up the unit and replace the memory module with the new 2Gig unit.

Here's a little tip; do the memory upgrade first, then installing the battery pack. By doing this you're less likely to damage the Netbook and/or memory. I fired up the little Netbook and check the memory in the system BIOS and in Windows, I was seeing all 2gigs of memory.

Next I and dumped the Windows Home it came with and installed Windows 7 home premium (64bit) from a USB flash drive that I had set up ahead of time. Once I had Windows up and running, I went ahead in and took advantage of the built in SD card reader to setup Windows memory boost using a 4Gig high-speed SD card. Wow, now I'm impressed, with 6gigs of available memory to Windows and this particular Netbook is using the Atom 450 processor, It runs Windows beautifully in native 64bit with hyper threading turned on in the CPU.

I love the lightweight of the unit, the built in wireless card is responsive, the keyboard has a nice solid feel to it, the LED screen is easy on the eyes and the fact I can run the unit the entire day before needing to recharge it again is a real bonus.

So, after running around with it for the first week, I am pleasantly surprised by the unit and have changed my thinking about bigger is not necessarily always better.

Just a side note, 2 of my coworkers liked the Netbook so much they have bought ones for themselves.

 "Medium range laptop" 2010-04-24
By Mario F. Maradiaga Cobos
I have this laptop since yesterday. I have had no problem whatsoever with the laptop. I was initially discouraged when I heard that people were having trouble with the touch pad and the media keys, but I personally have not found any tidiousness with them.

Pros:

- Sleek design

- Sound is good

- 4 gb of ram is more than enough to run any program (Corel, Sony Vegas are no biggie)

-The Dell Dock is very productive and efficient, (same or even better than Apple's dock)

Cons:

-Obsidian Black is a finger print magnet. (you will need to clean your laptop almost twice a day)

-I do not know why but microsoft ranged my laptop a 3.2/7.1

-Battery runs out pretty fast. With Win 7 power saver and dells plan as well you could get 3 1/2 hours tops.

I would highly recommend this laptop and I have no regrets on buying it so far.

 "A Fantastic Laptop" 2010-04-16

I am not the most gifted computer user, but everything is so easy with the Dell Inspiron 14. I would greatly recommend it!

 "dell 1464 inspiron" 2010-04-10
By King (greensboro, NC, US)
Had a latitude that died. Bought this laptop to replace it for business use. Biggest probs with it is print spooler continuously shuts off and you have to go thru 5-6 clicks to restart it several times a day. Very frustrating. Called dell support the first week. Was on hold for 45 minutes in the queue waiting for tech help. Once I got a live person (from india) he immed began a hard sell for the 270 dollar warranty package because I neede assTtce with software issues. When I called him on it and said "this is a hardware issue and dell's problem. are you refusing to even hear about the problem in an attempt to sell me something," he promptly hung up on me. I had wasted an hour. Dell support is a joke.

The other issue is the mousepad gets stuck pretty often, either blocking text when I don't intend to--forcing me to lift my hand and do a double tap or right click to turn off the blocking.

 "Decent for the Price" 2010-03-26
By B. McLoughlin (Maryland, USA)
Pros:

- The laptop is considerably light for its monitor size.

- It's very attractive and glossy.

- The keyboard has a good tactile response.

- Excellent heat dispersion (so far; it hasn't had time to build up dust or anything)

Cons:

- The glossy finish makes this a fingerprint magnet. Be careful if you're anal about these things!

- Intel HD graphics are adequate for productivity, but don't expect cutting-edge gaming.

- Computer ships with OS on separate partition, making file management tedious unless you reinstall yourself.

Detail:

I bought this computer about a week ago as a "mobile hub" for my college career (computer science). In terms of size, this strikes a good chord between functionality and portability. It's considerably lighter than it looks in the pictures, but nothing has a cheap feel to it. The track pad has a nice grain feel to it, and the edges are tapered to give a smooth feel at the corners; it's responsiveness is a little questionable, though. Finally, the computer has a very attractive and clean layout, but its high-gloss design is a real fingerprint magnet. Watch out if you're a neat freak, as you'll be spending a lot of time wiping off smudges.

"The mouse pad is absolutely useless!" 2010-03-23
By Zalak Thakkar
Hey Guys,

I bought this directly from Dell, The good things are:

Very light weight - very easy to carry around everywhere

Very thin - Unless you are comparing it to macbook air or something like that, its extremely thin.

Very Fast - the I3 processor is very fast

Here are the negatives:

First and FOREMOST - the mouse pad(or finger pad, whatever you would call it) is nto very practical, if your hands have even a bit of moisture or sweat, the mousepad wont respond well. In fact it is so painful that It makes the computer very much less productive than my previous laptop.

The keyboard also seems very crammed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Laptop, March 11, 2010
By R. McElveen "yendorpoet" (Tallahassee, Fl. USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have had this laptop for over a month, and I absolutely love it. It is a replacement for my Dell Laptop that has decided to move onto greener pastures. This is my first Toshiba, and I use computers for work all day. This is a wonderful laptop it has plenty of power thanks to the i7 Intel Processor, which was the main selling point for me. I needed a laptop that would hold up and be able to handle the Adobe products (Dreamweaver and Photoshop) that I use regularly and so far no issues at all. The speakers are very good, considering this is a laptop and the speakers are built in. I LOVE Windows 7 it is SOOOOO much better than Vista! The Webcam is wonderful and does a very good job as well. Overall, considering this is a budget priced laptop, when you factor in the i7 chip, 500GB HD, and 4GB DDR3 RAM. I am very pleased and I without any reservation recommend this product and I would purchase it again if I had to do it over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome laptop. A must have., March 26, 2010
All right... this may take a while. Let me start by saying I have abstained from owning a laptop computer my entire life and have strictly been using and building desktop PCs. For the past year and a half I have been going to school for graphic design. Now I spend so much time in front of a computer that I just had to be able to separate myself from my desk. Granted, being a graphic designer, I get a lot of flak for not purchasing a MacBook, but I just couldn't fathom the inflated price for a machine with lower performance (why can't I get a MacBook with a Quad Core?). Don't get me wrong- Macs are great computers- but for those of us that actually know about computers, we don't fall into the scheme of "it must be better because it's more expensive", which most novice users are likely to do. I spent almost two months researching and testing laptops trying to find one that included as many of the features I was looking for. The first computer that drew me to laptops was a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC at Sam's Club. I was just playing around on their laptops one day and brought up a song on Media Player... and it sounded awesome (for a laptop). Sure enough, there is a mini subwoofer on the bottom of the laptop. Unfortunately, the HP didn't win the battle due to the lack of a backlit keyboard (come on, HP- this is the one thing almost ALL laptop owners and shoppers want in a laptop- WAKE UP!). Living in Duluth, MN, the only place with a decent selection of laptops on display is Best Buy. There, I was first introduced to a Toshiba Satellite which caught my eye because of the i7 Quad Core it had as opposed to the i5 of the HP... for the same price ($899). Audio is a big part of my decision making process since I listen to music 24-7. I specifically tried the audio on every laptop at Best Buy (which I had to set up their Media Player libraries for every computer myself- Best Buy actually sucks at making their displays useful- other than their stupid Best Buy demo, nothing else on any computer was set up) only to be disappointed by everything (Dell, Gateway, standard HP, Samsung, even Sony all have absolutely useless speakers) except the Toshiba with its harman/kardon stereo speakers. Now that I have one at home I turn the audio all the way up and it sounds awesome (for tiny laptop speakers, anyway). They have a decent amount of mid-range and moderate bass response and have yet to distort. They still have a little trouble with loud rock music with a loss of bass at maximum volume, but classical music is perfect as well as big band (my Swing Kids soundtrack at full volume is priceless). I spent a long time kicking around whether to buy a custom built unit from Toshiba Direct, which was pricing out between $1,500 and $1,800 with tax, or order a prebuilt model. I eventually decided on the Satellite A505-S6040 which had absolutely everything I wanted (minus 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth, and Windows 7 Professional instead of Home Premium) and I purchased it (from Buy on ebay) for $1,201 with free tax and shipping. Some minor features of this machine are: seamless trackpad with multi-touch (no border and blends with deck seamlessly, it's just textured, and multi-touch works like a touchscreen with pinch-zoom, etc.), responsive out-of-the way touch media controls, full numeric keypad (this is about the smallest laptop available with a full-size standard AND numerical keypad, all with nice, big buttons that are comfortable to type with), and hard drive impact sensor which can save your important information in the event of a drop or even just a bump. The major features that make this model perfect are as follows: Intel i7-720QM Quad Core processor at 1.6 GHz and up to 2.8 GHz with Turbo Boost (basically, it works at a lower speed for normal use to save energy, then seamlessly kicks into high gear when needed), 6GB DDR3 SDRAM, 500GB 7200rpm hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 1GB graphics, slot-loading DVD/CD drive with Labelflash (like Lightscribe direct disk labeling), Edge-to-Edge display (the glass covers pretty much the whole screen- still with a black bezel around it- but it's seamless and much nicer looking), LED BACKLIGHT KEYBOARD WITH NUMERICAL KEYPAD (this was awesome and definitely a selling point), HDMI port (connect right to a bigger monitor or TV easily- with Hi-Def audio as well- also has standard RGB out, too), integrated 1.3mp webcam with microphone, 802.11n wireless (which, once set up, finds and connects to wireless networks perfectly and quickly), wired LAN connection for extra speed, and enough USB ports an one eSATA/USB combo port to connect anything. The only very minor drawback to this or any laptop is battery life (but Toshiba's Eco Utility makes it easy to change to a minimal-power-consumption mode for when you're away from an outlet). And I really wish someone other than Apple would make an aluminum unibody- it just helps make it thinner, lighter, and better at dispersing heat. Final notes: the charger is a bit heavy and bulky- not very portable- get yourself a Targus APA6922US (it's smaller and more portable than a MacBook charger) which can charge your laptop and cell phone or other electronic device simultaneously; like all laptops, battery life is so-so, just buy another battery- you can switch it on-the-fly; portable mouse- I have a Microsoft Arc- super portable, full sized, and Laser responsiveness so it works on just about anything- no mouse pad or desk needed; this laptop is a little large- doesn't fit in two of the three messenger bags I own, and barely fits into my school backpack which is made for laptops, but it makes for a perfect combination of keyboard and screen size! As for speed and multitasking- I was running Pandora streaming music, Adobe Photoshop, had two internet windows open, and ripping a DVD to the hard drive at one time with no system lag at all! Oh, and for all you die-hard Mac users... I tested my Toshiba A505-S6040 laptop side-by-side with several Macs... I loaded Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Bridge simultaneously in less time than any Mac (laptop or desktop) took to load just Photoshop (but the Mac still boots up from power-on faster, darn that Microsoft). BUY THIS LAPTOP. I AM DEFINITELY GLAD I PURCHASED IT! INFINITELY USEFUL, POWERFUL, AND PORTABLE WITH A PLETHER OF FEATURES!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy with this computer for my needs, great price., March 21, 2010
This computer is an absolute great price for what it offers, and it delivers. I am a photographer who needed to upgrade to a computer with a faster processor and one that could handle the workload I put on it with CS4, and this one is great. Compared to my old laptop, this one zips right through loading enormous raw images and and processing in photoshop with ease. I spent a while looking to find a computer that offered everything this one does in a price range I could afford and also had a bigger screen size. My old laptop was a 17", so this one was a little bit of a downgrade in regards to screen size, but its still good enough and an acceptable trade off for the specs of the computer itself. I also do a bit of gaming, WOW particularly, and it runs better than my husband's computer in regards to graphics..which he isn't necessarily too happy with.

As for two other reviews about some negative aspects of the laptop:

One reviewer mentioned the DVD drive was extremely noisy. It is a little loud, I will attest to that, but I wouldn't say anywhere near as loud as I took from their review. I did not find it overly disturbing or distracting, and I could certainly hear the sound of the music or movie I was playing over it.

Another reviewer mentioned how he hated the computer because of the keyboard. I think the keyboard is great. I have no trouble feeling which key is which. Its bigger than normal though, or maybe, just the letter/numbers on each key are bigger than normal. I felt like I had ordered something designed for an older person or someone who may not be able to see well at first glance because of the size of the letters. The "L" is approx. 4-5cm long. So that was something I sort of laughed about at first, but now I don't notice it at all. I am picky about how my 'keyboard' feels, and normally would go to store and test out all the laptops, and if the keystroke didn't feel good to me, I would reconsider a purchase of any particular laptop. But I really like this keyboard, and I like the back-lighting, which I didn't have previously.

Overall, I think this computer is a steal what what you are getting.

 "Great Student Laptop" 2010-04-12
By Robert Norton (Cary, NC)
Not sure where some of the comments are coming about bad quality and service, this is by far the best rated company for quality in the PC business right now. I have had absolutely no problems with my Ideapad. My brother's ideapad had a issue where the hard drive was making a grinding noise. He called service, got right through to someone, they sent him a box to mail the computer in and he got it back working perfectly 3 days later. I definitely recommend this product and even more highly recommend the company for positive computing experience.

 "Great Netbook Alternative" 2010-03-20
By Jordan Griesshaber
I received my new Lenovo U350 a few days ago, so here's what I have to say early on:

Pros:

1.Thin and Light...great size...3.5lbs is perfect...acceptable 5 hours from included 4 cell battery (8 cell available for $100)

For those looking at something like a Netbook (I recently returned one of the new Pinetrail Netbooks because of it only had Windows 7 Starter (very limited) and without a Broadcom HD card, will never be able to display any sort of HD streaming due to lack of any HD decoding

2. Intel SU4100 CPU is dual core allowing the laptop to use Windows 7 better than Netbooks, especially once you install Antivirus, the second core helps spread the workload around, unlike the single core N450 Atoms on Netbooks

3. Intel GMA 4500MHD is great for basic internet, AERO GLass UI, and HD decoding...just don't expect much else from ANY Intel integrated graphics...or you could spend $150 more and get the U350 with the switchable ATI card...just remember what the machine is...

4. Mac Pro looks without the Apple premium...for those who care when they are Starbucks

5. Stays cool on your lap, and fan isn't too loud...and isn't topover prone like the netbooks...

6. Full sized keyboard

7. Multitouch touchpad

8. Bright clear screen that allows full webpages without zooming out (unlike the 10 inch Netbooks) (it is a glossly screen for those who care)

9. Veriface camera login is pretty cool, say cheese!

Cons:

1. Touchpad buttons are sort of clunky, they work, but they are sort of annoying

2. Fn key is where the left Ctrl button usually is, so I keep hitting it instead of Ctrl when I Ctrl Enter to input web addresses

3. You really have to unistall and bunch of crap to get going, but that is to be expected from most computers...

4. Lenovo's support site is tragic at best...nothing like Dell or Apple...but there doesn't seem to be anything you need besides the Intel Graphics driver upgrades which can be autoinstalled from Intel's site

Overall, very happy with the laptop...for those complaining about the batter hinge getting broken I say this:

It is a ultra thin and light, so this is going to be a more fragile machine than a clunky notebook...so be careful with it...plastic doesn't like being forced so play gingerly...

I bought a Targus 14" Messenger laptop bag which works perfect for this machine...BTW

 "DOA" 2010-02-14
By George D. Gillen
It arrived 3 days before Christmas not working. Just as well since even the feel of the unit was less than inspiring. My son is now the proud owner of a Dell that works albeit well after the majical day.

"Very Satisfied with this Lenovo" 2010-01-19
By Lance Echols (Santa Fe, NM)
I was in need of a new laptop after my 5 year old HP had seen it best days. I wanted a lightweight laptop and was looking at the myriad of netbook choices out there in the $400-$500 range against products like this.

After over a week of research reading reviews and comparing features - this was the choice for me. I've been using it mostly for web browsing/youtube and the like, but also connect to work PC remotely and have spend several hours working spreadsheets/docs with no complaints. This is a downsized monitor size from my HP's 15 incher, but it's hardly noticeable.

I've since set up my desk with a 20" monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse. With the 3 USB (2 on the right,1 on left side), VGA and HDMI ports; setting it up as a sudo-desktop was a nice option others in this range don't offer.

Pros:

-Full size keyboard

-Ultra portable with plus size screen compared to netbooks with same/less capacity.

-Crisp graphics

-Quick boot with Windows 7 Home Premium

-Battery life as advertised

-Peripheral ports: HDMI, 3USB, Ethernet, VGA

-Solid construction

Cons:

-Mousepad and L&R click buttons take getting used to; just don't feel right but not broken in any way.

-Sound volume; not really a negative considering this is a ultra-portable unit and space is limited for better speakers. Nothing a set of earphones or external speakers wouldn't fix.

Overall I'm very pleased with this unit and given the price drop under $500 now, I would continue to recommend it.

With the MacBook Air, Apple has created the world's thinnest laptop--measuring an unprecedented 0.16-inches at its thinnest point (and 0.76 inches thick overall). Apple brings its vaunted multi-touch technology, found on the iPhone, to its laptops with the MacBook Air, enabling you to pinch, swipe, or rotate to zoom in on text, advance through a photo album, or adjust an image via the oversized trackpad. And the MacBook Air embodies Apple's continuing environmental progress with its aluminum enclosure, a material highly desired by recyclers, a mercury-free LCD display with arsenic-free glass, and brominated flame retardant-free material for the majority of circuit boards as well as PVC-free internal cables.

Despite the its slender shell, the MacBook Air doesn't skimp on the specifications. It includes a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, full-size and backlit keyboard, and a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing. This MacBook Air (model MC233LL/A) is powered by a custom-built 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved multitasking performance. And it features the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor, which delivers outstanding 3D game play with up to five times faster graphics performance than the previous generation. Other features include 2 GB of RAM, a 120 GB hard disk drive, Wi-Fi connectivity via 802.11a/b/g/n standards, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and up to a 5-hour battery life.

Amazingly thin at just 0.16 inches at its thinnest and 0.76 inches at its thickest point, the MacBook Air weighs just 3 pounds.

It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system--an operating system custom-designed for the advanced technology inside--and it also comes with the iLife '09 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes.

With the trackpad's Multi-Touch technology, you can pinch, swipe, or rotate to adjust an image, zoom in on text, or advance through a photo album.

The MacBook Air includes a vibrant 13.3-inch LED-backlit display and a full-sized keyboard (see larger image).
Design
The thinness of MacBook Air is impressive, but even more impressive is that fact that there's a full-size notebook encased in the 0.16 to 0.76 inch of sleek, sturdy anodized aluminum. This svelte, 3-pound laptop has a vibrant, energy efficient 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display, and its spacious trackpad offers multi-touch gesture support for pinch, rotate and swipe--making it more intuitive than ever to browse and rotate photos or zoom into web pages in Safari. It also features a full-size keyboard that's backlit, making it ideal for dimly lit environments such as airplanes, studios or conference halls. It includes a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the keys as well as the display brightness for optimal visibility.

One of Apple's most celebrated innovations is the MagSafe power adapter connector, which offers a magnetic connection instead of a physical one. So, if you happen to trip over a power cord, you won't send the MacBook Air flying off a table or desk--the cord simply disconnects, without damage to either the cord or the system.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Custom-built to fit within the compact dimensions of the laptop, the MacBook Air is powered by a 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an enormous 6 MB of Smart Cache, an L2 cache that can be shared between the cores as needed. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts. And with 4MB of shared L2 cache, the MacBook Air is a multi-tasking monster. With such substantial L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Video Processing & Output
Whether you're working on a Keynote presentation or watching a movie before you catch a flight, every document, video, and photo on your MacBook Air will look sharp on the glossy 13.3-inch widescreen display. With the new NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor, the MacBook Air changes the game and just about everything you do with it. The 9400M provides up to an amazing 4x performance boost over the original MacBook Air. Photos appear in iPhoto quickly, transitions in Keynote are seamless, games play more smoothly, and movie and video playback is better than ever before. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory.

The MacBook Air now includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays

Hard Drive and Memory
For storage, this MacBook Air comes with a 120 GB Serial ATA hard disk drive (4200 RPM). The 2 GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and it maximizes the capacity for this laptop.

Optical Drive
Because of the amazingly thin design of the MacBook Air, an optical (DVD/CD) drive was not included. To install software from a disc, you can wirelessly use or "borrow" optical drives on remote PCs or Macs using the Remote Disk feature. This allows you full access to an optical drive without having to haul one around. If you want to have an optical drive for burning CDs and DVDs, you can purchase the optional MacBook Air SuperDrive (sold separately). This multi-format CD/DVD read/write drive is powered by the MacBook Air's USB port, eliminating the need to carry a separate power adapter.

Networking
The MacBook Air doesn't include wired Ethernet networking, and instead relies solely on Wi-Fi to connect to your home network as well as wireless hotspots. The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the optional AirPort Extreme base station as well as Apple's Time Capsule Wi-Fi base station/hard drive--both of which include 802.11n capabilities. If you don't have access to a wireless network, you can use an optional USB Ethernet Adapter (sold separately)

Use the built-in Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the display bezel is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

Designed with the Environment in Mind
Apple has worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins that are a common part of computer manufacturing. Apple engineers removed the majority of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more in the MacBook Air.

Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software for the MacBook, they're designed to work together to produce a smarter product that uses less electricity. For instance, to reduce energy consumption, the hard drive spins down automatically when inactive. MacBook Air also decides which processor--CPU or GPU--is best suited to efficiently perform a task. The processor even throttles down to save power between keystrokes as you type. The LED-backlit display in MacBook Air is another feature that plays an important part in conserving energy, consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. And the display is designed to dim when you enter a darkened room.

The MacBook Air meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. MacBook also meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date.

The MacBook Air has also earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured.

"Very nice, but not perfect" 2009-12-11
By Christopher Tran (LA,California)
I'm a PC, but I'm also a Mac. A Macbook Air (MBA) to be exact. I'm very much into design so it just made sense. I first considered something like the Dell Adamo, Latitude Z or the HP ENVY13, But the Dells were heavily under-powered processor-wise. The HP was crazy powerful, but heftier than I would have liked. The Latitude's Euro design gave the MBA's design a run for it money, but it starts at over two grand and you'll easily knock on $2500 with the bells and whistles, Yikes! The HP ENVY 13 is very powerful and the only ultra-portable with the i7 processor. But for what I'll be using this for, the mobility and price is more important to me. The Adamo seemed to match the price and features of the Macbook Air best, but finding that the design, feature and price pretty much a draw (I personally thought the MBA had a very small edge on Design), I settled on the MBA because of the fact that I can run Windows 7 as well as Mac OS X(which I also use for different purposes)and the better build quality. I have to say, the unibody design really makes the thing feel as if it was carved from one piece of aluminum. There's minimal flex to speak of. Closed, it just feels so nice in your hands.

The 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor is a lot better than the 1.2 and 1.4 that are available in the Dells; more than enough for my usage. This might have been a bit meek had I not already had an Intel Core 2 Quad Desktop computer at home. This also made HP ENVY pointless.

The screen is more than adequate and much better than a netbook. Since it's so light, it really can go anywhere a netbook can. The nice Keyboard and trackpad was also refreshing.

The Solid State Drive is also nice, but after some usage, I really don't find them all that different from a standard HD, perhaps a bit faster, but not that noticeable. It certainly is cooler and less noisy. Some users have complained about it getting a bit warm, but I'm thinking they've got an HD instead of an SSD.

And now for the few CONs:

No optical drive - since I won't be needing this too often it's not a big deal. I already have an external Blu-Ray Drive that I used to install everything. Once that was done, I can only image using it for an occasion Blu-Ray/DVD movie, but even this will be rare, unless I'm in a hotel room somewhere and bore out of my mind.

Connectivity:

No Ethernet, big deal! It's all about wireless!

Weird Mini Display port - also not a big deal since I don't imaging connecting an external monitor to this much.

Only one USB - This one, I admit, is pretty significant. It was a bit of hassle to swap USB devices a bit, but again, I only use multiple devices a handful of times (mainly a USB DJ Console Mixer and an external USB HD containing the music I want to mix). I got a little griffin USB "Splitter" which was nothing more than a very tiny USB Hub, but it did have some trouble getting enough power to the HD from this one USB port, so I did have to add a USB power cable to the mix (the audio was clipping heavily during mixing and transition). So keep that in mind if you're planning to daisy-chain three hard drives, a soda cooler and a reading light to the USB port- just don't. It works fine with the majority of other (low powered) USB devices.

RAM - Here's the other big CON! While 2GB of RAM will probably be ok for now, but I would have loved having the option of adding more. I have 8GB on my desktop and I actually use it (photo and video editing, media center functions, terminal services, etc.)! While I'm not doing much of that (maybe a little Photoshoping) on this thing, all it takes is that killer application that requires at least 4GB of RAM that I can't use that will drive me nuts!

I have a first generation Macbook Pro from work and I always loved the design of it. This takes things to the next level. I'm primarily a Windows user, and this seems to work a bit more seamlessly with Windows than the Macbook Pro(although with the latest drivers and software updates for bootcamp from apple, it got better). It's kinda odd that I went with an Mac to run Windows, but it was a calculated choice. Had I been looking for a full-function laptop, it would have likely been an HP or Dell.

 "really nice!" 2010-04-20
By Abdul Ali Ebanks-gordon
Toshiba has done a really good job with this laptop, its fast, the screen is very good in its clarity, wireless its excellent, I get good reception, where my wife laptop does not( diff brand). I've yet to encounter any problems, but I've not had it for long so we'll see. For now good.

"Great, light-weight, powerful machine for daily use." 2010-04-04
By J. M Wallace (Raleigh, NC United States)
I bought the U505-2008 model. Seems to be similar to the one described. I love it. Have it had it for about a month. The only negative is the short battery life, but when you look at the lightweight portables with longer battery life (e.g., HP, Dell), their batteries are twice as heavy. I wanted a lightweight laptop above the netbook size for everyday use that was fast. This is it. The screen is bright, it is fast, easy to set up, 500 GB HD, 4MB, i3 intel core. Is it perfect? No, but for the price and the features, as well as the weight, I couldn't find much better. Also, Toshiba has reputation for being durable. I took it on a recent trip to Spain, used local outlets, had no problems with it, works like a dream, especially compared to the clunky Dell Latitude I was using before.

 "Nice" 2010-04-02
By A. Whalen (Raleigh, NC, USA)
I also have an HP DV4t, half a dozen older Toshiba, Sony and HP notebooks, and a whole gaggle of netbooks. So I'm kind of addicted to cool portable hardware.

Among the myriad laptops & netbooks I've owned and used, this one is not the best, but certainly above-average.

Stylish, Core i3 is quick, memory & HDD are roomy. The screen is bright, color saturation is good but mildly washed out relative to the better panels out there. The 8" 1600x900 panel on Sony Vaio P-series is the worst color I've ever seen; this one is above average, just not the best. Beware that this unit (Amazon's, specifically) does not come with a backlit keyboard, which is part of the standard U505-S2005 build spec on Toshiba's website. I bought & installed the backlit keyboard separately, but it cost another $60. So actually this isn't a great deal, it's a cut-rate edition for a cut-rate price. If the backlit keyboard, bluetooth and slot-loading DVD don't really matter to you, then save yourself maybe $150 and snag one of these. Overall it's a very stylish case wrapped around some respectable hardware. However, if you don't care about the relatively compact 13" LCD or the fashionable presentation of the dark brown case, you might be just as well served with a standard 15.4" unit from HP or Acer, with similar hardware, for a couple hundred bucks less. That's true of any laptop that charges a premium for its design.

If you do care about the style and compactness, U505 is a great option.

Featuring a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, the MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well as stronger and more durable. But Apple didn't stop innovating with the body's design. The MacBook Pro also includes a new 15-inch, LED-backlit glass display (instead of an LCD panel) as well as a glass trackpad that doesn't include a button (for larger tracking area) that features Apple's Multi-Touch technology.

The 15-inch unibody MacBook Pro (see larger version).
This 15-inch MacBook Pro (model MB985LL/A) also now includes Apple's innovative built-in notebook battery for up to 7 hours of wireless productivity on a single charge without adding thickness, weight or cost. Using Adaptive Charging and advanced chemistry first introduced with the 17-inch MacBook Pro the built-in battery delivers up to 1000 recharges before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity--nearly three times the lifespan of conventional batteries.

Under the hood, the MacBook Pro is powered by a powerful 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 3 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And this MacBook Pro includes two video processors for ultimate flexibility: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics for great everyday performance and NVIDIA 9600M GT discrete graphics (256 MB of GDDR3 memory) for fast, smooth video--perfect for 3D gaming.

Other hardware features include a 320 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 8 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), FireWire 800 port, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and a Secure Digital card slot for easy access to digital photos and audio stored on SD and MMC memory cards.

It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system--an operating system custom-designed for the advanced technology inside--and it also comes with the iLife '09 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes.

The Unibody MacBook Pro Design
Traditionally notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the MacBook Pro all of those parts with just one part--the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook Pro starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook Pro, you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable--perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack.

Off-the-shelf lithium-ion cells come in fixed, cylindrical shapes. The 15-inch MacBook Pro is powered by custom-made, ultrathin lithium-polymer batteries.
The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking.

The keyboard has also been improved, with the rigid aluminum keyboard webbing cut precisely to hold the keys, which are curved to perfectly fit fingers. And it's illuminated, so when you're in low-light settings, such as airplanes or conference rooms, you can always see what you're typing.

The 15-inch display is made of edge-to-edge, uninterrupted glass for a smooth, seamless surface and features LED backlighting for brilliant instant-on performance that uses up to 30 percent less energy than its predecessor. The ultra-thin displays provide crisp images and vivid colors which are ideal for viewing photos and movies

Long-Lasting Battery
The 15-inch MacBook Pro now includes a newly engineered lithium-polymer battery that that lasts up to 7 hours on a single charge thanks to advanced chemistry, intelligent monitoring of the system and battery, and Adaptive Charging technology. The battery is built right into the computer, eliminating the space-consuming mechanisms and housings that standard removable batteries require. This non-removable battery also provides a longer battery lifespan of up to 1000 recharges--meaning fewer depleted batteries and less waste, which is better for the environment.

Giving it a lifespan of up to 1000 recharges required breakthroughs in battery technology. Apple electro-chemists developed advanced chemistry that maintains the battery's charging capabilities longer than ever. And while most notebooks wear down their batteries by charging them at a constant rate, the 15-inch MacBook Pro takes a different approach. Using an Apple-developed technology called Adaptive Charging, a microchip on the battery constantly communicates with the computer to determine the optimal way to charge its cells, adjusting the current up and down depending on a variety of conditions. Combined, these advancements offer a dramatic improvement in battery lifespan: more than three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries--up to five years.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Video Processing & Output
This 15-inch MacBook Pro combines the efficiency of an integrated graphics processor with the desktop-class performance of a discrete graphics processor thanks to the inclusion of both. Out of the box, it runs the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, which provides plenty of performance for everyday use with up to 5 hours of battery life. But when you need turbocharged performance for the most graphically intensive tasks, the discrete NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT processor delivers--such as for demanding 3D games like Quake, Call of Duty, and Spore. And thanks to a new graphics architecture, it's easy to switch between these two processors. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory, while the 9600M provides 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory.

The MacBook Pro includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display.

The 320 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to USB 2.0. The 4 GB of PC3-8500 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 8 GB.

Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts.

Environmental Considerations
Apple has worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins that are a common part of computer manufacturing. Apple engineers removed the majority of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more in the MacBook Pro.

The LED-backlit display in the MacBook Pro is another feature that plays an important part in conserving energy, consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. And the display is designed to dim when you enter a darkened room.

The MacBook Pro meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. MacBook also meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date.

The MacBook Pro has also earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured.

 "MBP 15" 2.8Ghz Core Duo" 2010-04-17
By MacFan (Florida, USA)
Great product, I actually sent this back for the new I-7 MacBook but would've kept it had it not been for the upgrade. I've been using Apple products for years and wasn't disappointed, just wanted the performance upgrade.

"Windows user makes the jump!" 2010-04-12
By Phillip N. Puckett (Buena Vista, CO)
I have been looking at switching to a Mac for my personal laptop for several years but the cost always delayed my decision. Well I finally hit the order button on the 15.4" MacBook Pro and can't be happier. The quality of the build is outstanding and I love how smooth the OS and applications run. It actually feels like a single product which I know is the point of a Mac but it is so refreshing. I've spent a week getting to know the OS and built in apps and have found it easy to learn. It is funny that I have to learn to do things the natural way (such as the finger controls on the touch pad).

Figuring out how to transition over from Quicken on my PC is still a challenge. I've been looking at iBank and may give it a shot. I just ordered iWork so I can migrate off Excel/Word/PowerPoint.

Pros:

1) top of the line construction

2) stable OS

3) ease of use working with pictures

4) smooth integration with my camera, printer and Internet apps

Cons:

1) cost is a bit high (but snagged a good deal on Amazon)

2) while the shell is nice and sleek, the edge is a bit sharp and can rub on your wrist if you are at a bad angle

Overall I am VERY HAPPY

"Just missing perfection for a sub-par mouse pad" 2010-04-09
By G. Joel Franco (Las Vegas, NV)
As my 4yr old HP laptop finally died on me, I was in the market for a new laptop. I am in the Film/TV industry so I needed something sturdy, fast, and something I could use editing software such as Final Cut Pro. Naturally my attention moved to a MAC and I settled on the MacBook Pro 15" line.

Overall, this is truly a real amazing laptop. The keyboard is wide enough, and easy to use, speed is great, and so far I haven't had too many problems switching from Windows to Apple OS. While I don't think Apple OS is the salvation to the world, I do see lots of improvements over Windows.

What is not good about the MacBook Pro (and for the price it is unacceptable) is the mouse pad and the heat of the computer. The mouse pad is not good by any standard. Often times touching the pad (something which works wonderfully and most other laptops) does not work until you actually press on the pad. When you try to touch the pad, often you end highlighting parts of a web page for no reason. Same actually happens with pressing on the pad, but less frequently. Also, I find myself having to press real hard on the pad for it to work properly. Again, this should not happen.

What is good about the pad, is the ability to use it almost like an iPhone. While I don't particularly find this feature useful, I can see that people like it and may take advantage.

The computer does get real hot (again, for the price they need to do something about it), but I have read that on most Macs (desktops as well) the chips tend to run hotter than on Windows based PC. Curious, but again, for the price these costs, they need to do something to refrain from heating up like this.

This is truly a real good product, but not perfect as price, heat of the computer, and horrid mousepad keep it from being absolutely great.

"Great technology, but display isn't "pro"" 2010-04-08
By BP
When I pay between $1500-2000 for a 15.4" laptop, I usually expect to get an exceptional display, something that will do AT LEAST 1680x1050 resolution, and possibly even 1920x1080/1920x1200 (like my thinkpads). The 15.4 MBP does 1440x900, which is simply subpar. For professionals in music, video and gfx, that is not considered a "pro" resolution, it is considered a resolution for the masses that typically doesn't know the difference. Its meant for those older folks who no longer care for high resolution displays, and want something they can see, in other words, HUGE icons and fonts. This laptop isn't for them, but rather, this is for the PROFESSIONALS, as the name indicates.

Usually mac does a great job with the latest and greatest, but the display resolution is a huge let down. Knowing mac, they intentionally scaled it down so that they could offer 1680x1050 in the next revision. This is their typical M.O. with their ipods and appleTVs also.

I have a 17" as well, which does 1920x1200, and that is an awesome piece of equipment. If you don't mind the extra price, weight and size, which is a considerable difference now I realize, get it. The extra size and weight is well worth it in my opinion, and it will still be lighter than most PC laptops that are 15" displays.
